Dan's Obituary

September 1, 1939 to June 18, 2023

Daniel Stowell died as a result of injuries sustained during a go-cart race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on June 18, 2023. He was 83 and doing something that he enjoyed.

Dan was born in Tulsa, OK on September 1, 1939 to Frederick Marion Stowell and Marion Louise (Chastain) Stowell. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1957 and from Oklahoma State University in 1961 with a degree in business. Dan had a long career with IBM before retiring in 1987. He specialized in quality assurance and even authored a book on the subject.

If there were a phrase that could describe Dan’s life, it would be a desire for speed. As a teenager, he owned a motorcycle, built a racing outboard speed boat, and worked with friends on a 1932 jalopy that was more rust than car. In his twenties he learned to fly along with his first wife, Pam. Through the rest of his life, he filled his spare time with hobbies that generated high levels of adrenaline including snow skiing and racing go-carts and Formula Vee vintage cars. He volunteered in local and national organizations including the World Karting Association where he was inducted in the WKA Hall of Fame in 2022. He also volunteered for the Cherry Creek Townhomes HOA and the Up the Creek Ski and Social Club in Colorado.

Dan is preceded in death by his father and mother; half-sister Elizabeth Stowell Anderson; half-brother James H. Stowell; second wife Cynthia Hunt; and nephew John F. Anderson. He is survived by his adult children David, Robert, and Linda; brother Frederick M. Stowell; his first wife Pamela Kay Gassett; sister-in-law Ve Anne Stowell; three grandchildren; a great granddaughter; and multiple cousins.

His family and friends take condolence in the fact that Dan died doing something he loved and is at peace.

The internment of Dan's ashes and his memorial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery at 5111 S Memorial Drive in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Monday, August 7, 2023 at 11:00am.
